                                                 COOKING

                                        By Gaurika  Bhatia

As the day dawns, a lovely aroma awakens me ! I walk sleepily straight towards the kitchen where my mother is cooking something delicious.

Cooking! So much fun !

The day begins with Mama asking me what to eat !

We decide on breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner and dessert.

Cooking a balanced diet of good foods is important for the body and mind as it provides our body with more energy to enjoy learning and playing!

For breakfast:

            SPICED WHOLEMEAL AND OAT PANCAKES

PREP. TIME: 5 MINS. COOKING TIME: 8 MINS. MAKES 6 PANCAKES

2 tablespoons quick cooking rolled oats

A pinch nutmeg (jaiphal) powder

A pinch cardamom (elaichi) powder

¼ teaspoon cinnamon (dalchini) powder

1 ½ tablespoon powdered sugar

2 tablespoons melted butter

¾ cup milk

½ teaspoon Eno’s fruit salts

            OTHER INGREDIENTS

FOR SERVING

Butter and jam

  1. Combine all the ingredients except the fruit salts into a bowl
  2. Whisk till it’s a smooth batter
  3. Heat a non-stick pan and grease with butter
  4. Add the fruit salts to the batter and mix well
  5. Pour spoonfuls of the batter on the pan to make 2” diameter pancakes
  6. Cook on both sides with butter till golden brown
  7. Serve hot with butter and jam or whipped cream and fruit

A good and healthy meal to begin your day !

It was not difficult for me to resist French fries for lunch, for even though they are yummy and tasty, they are of no use to my body. These junk foods cannot be digested by our bodies and can lead to problems such as obesity, migrane etc

I would love to share a recipe for Chocolate Delight that I have learnt in my cooking class.

INGREDIENTS

2 big packets of Marie biscuits

½ litre (500 ml) milk

4 – 5 tablespoons cocoa

2 packets of fresh cream

1 cup powdered sugar

2 big bars of Cadbury Dairy Milk

            METHOD

  1. Warm the milk, add the cocoa and half the sugar, and mix
  2. Beat sugar and cream together
  3. Dip Marie biscuits in the milk and make a layer on your plate
  4. Pour some cream over it
  5. Make alternate layers till the cream layer is on top
  6. Garnish with grated chocolate, put it in the fridge to cool, serve cold !

In our cooking class, our teacher has told us while cooking it is important not to use too much oil or ghee, and not to over-cook the food. We must also be very hygienic while cooking i.e. wash the vegetables, and cover the food so that it is protected against flies.
